The RFID Journal LIVE! 2019 conference and exhibition will include a special workshop, RFID for Airline Baggage Tracking, run in cooperation with the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The workshop will be free for all airline executives who wish to attend. The conference will be held April 2 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Arizona.

The workshop will feature Andrew Price, IATA’s head of global baggage operations, who will explain the organization’s requirements for baggage tracking by 2020, the benefit to airlines, and the practical steps airlines can take to start complying with the requirements. In addition, the session will feature a case study by Brandon Woodruff, Senior Analyst at Delta Air Lines, the first major airline to track baggage worldwide.
Additional sessions will help airlines learn how to evaluate RFID tags and readers for their applications, as well as how to deploy solutions to enhance customer service and improve the bottom line.

From the Trenches – Deploying Airline Baggage Tracking Infrastructure at 120 airports worldwide
Each year, Delta customers check more than 120 million bags as they travel. In 2016, Delta became the first airline to roll out RFID bag tags and provide customers with real-time tracking of their bags throughout their travel experience.
RFID Global teamed with IBM to lead the design and deployment of a solution comprised of 4,600 scanners, 3,800 RFID printers and 600 pier and claim readers, integrated to enable hands-free scanning of baggage throughout the handling process.

Diana Hage is CEO, RFID Global, with a decade of RFID design and deployment experience in the Aerospace industry, having worked with industry leaders Airbus, Boeing and Delta Airlines on global asset tracking initiatives. Diana managed communications, resource hiring and provided program oversight throughout the Delta Air Lines deployment. She is focused on how technology can be used to enhance customer experience and make a positive impact.
Gary McCann is a Sr. Program Manager at RFID Global and brings 14 years of RFID expertise and 11 years with IBM to his role. Gary spent two years in the trenches leading the Delta Airline Baggage Tracking deployment. Gary managed multiple teams of globe-trotting field engineers and technicians as they upgraded printers at jetways and concourses, performed testing and optimization of RFID infrastructure, and supported Delta Ground Personnel in getting the system up and running. Gary was responsible for scheduling, field communications, on-site logistics, daily reporting and has a wealth of lessons learned from the field.
Terry Alderson leads the engineering and solutions architecture team at RFID Global. Terry’s 16 years at Boeing and 14 years in RFID R&D and systems engineering makes him one of the world¹s foremost experts in deploying RFID solutions in the airline industry. He has designed and installed passive RFID and active RTLS solutions for airline baggage tracking, work-in-process tracking and supply chain visibility in numerous facilities. Terry spent 10 years as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army.
Pedro M. Reyes, PhD is an associate professor of operations and supply chain management. Currently in his 16th year at Baylor University, Pedro teaches the global supply chain management and applied supply chain analytics courses and has been actively researching RFID applications in the supply chain for improving global supply chain operations since 2002. He served as the Director for the Center of Excellence in Supply Chain Management and is the author of the book RFID in the Supply Chain. Prior to Baylor University, Pedro worked in high-tech manufacturing in various roles in operations and supply chain management.
